Paper Scrap: 2007

So here’s the best of 2007:

1. The Remains of the Day by Kazio Ishiguro. (Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking. Beautifully written.)

2. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (For those of you like me who didn’t likeThe Virgin Diaries, you’ll like this. This book is cinematic in scope, and Eugenides crafts Cal’s story with care and compassion.)

3. All seven of Harry Potter. (My friend Jessica and I created a reading group of two to read all of the books again.)

4. But if I had to choose my favorite… Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. (Harry gets angry and confused and really has to grapple with being who he is. He has to come into his own.)

5. Team of Rivals: The Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. (So moving. While the whole book is informational, her account of all that happened the night of the assassination was the most gripping. I learned so much more than I ever knew before.)

6. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. (A delightful, realistic, common-sense guidebook for all writers. Her chapter “Shitty First Drafts” is a classic unto itself.)
